Front Desk by Kelly Yang book review

By Charlotte Wilson

This multi-award-winning book is truly one of a kind! It offers a delightful reading experience while tackling important issues. The series is inspired by author Kelly Yang's own childhood experiences, lending authenticity and depth to the story.

The protagonist, Mia Tang, is introduced as a ten-year-old girl in the first book, "Front Desk," and her character matures and evolves throughout the series. Born in China, Mia immigrates to America at a young age with her family. Unlike many children her age who live in large, luxurious homes, Mia resides in a modest motel where her parents work tirelessly to make ends meet.

Mia takes pride in helping out at the motel called the Calivista. Especially by checking in guests at the front desk. However, her family harbors a secret: they allow fellow immigrants to stay at the motel, risking everything if the harsh and unforgiving motel owner, Mr. Yao, discovers their actions.

Despite the challenges she faces, Mia dreams of becoming a writer. Her journey is not without obstacles—her mother once tells her, "You know what you are in English? You’re a bicycle, and the other kids are cars." Yet Mia clings to her determination and continues to pursue her passion for writing, proving that her courage and determination can help her over come this tricky year.

At school Mia meets Lupe, they quickly become best friends. Though they are both hiding big secret.. Lupe's family is the Cable technician for the Calivista. One day the cable breaks done and they call in Lupe's family. Mia and Lupe see each other right away. Though that only helps make their friendship stronger.

I believe this book is amazing because everyone can relate to it. It also helps remind you you are not alone. As well as making kids want to learn about their culture and try to embrace it. No matter if you have jeans or cute flower pants we all our special. And if you do not believe me read the book and tell me what you think after?! No go get Front desk, find a cozy spot and start reading. You   have a a exiting roller-coaster ahead!

Rest of the series coming soon
