Young Readers Book Nook: Front Desk By Kelly Yang Book Review
Front Desk by Kelly Yang book review
The protagonist, Mia Tang, is introduced as a ten-year-old girl in the first book, "Front Desk," and her character matures and evolves throughout the series. Born in China, Mia immigrates to America at a young age with her family. Unlike many children her age who live in large, luxurious homes, Mia resides in a modest motel where her parents work tirelessly to make ends meet.
Mia takes pride in helping out at the motel called the Calivista. Especially by checking in guests at the front desk. However, her family harbors a secret: they allow fellow immigrants to stay at the motel, risking everything if the harsh and unforgiving motel owner, Mr. Yao, discovers their actions.
Despite the challenges she faces, Mia dreams of becoming a writer. Her journey is not without obstacles—her mother once tells her, "You know what you are in English? You’re a bicycle, and the other kids are cars." Yet Mia clings to her determination and continues to pursue her passion for writing, proving that her courage and determination can help her over come this tricky year.
